The Magic of Contrasts
The year 2022 will be a year of interesting combinations. Simple, understated forms will remain in vogue, but their decorative details will go beyond the Scandinavian modesty that has dominated in recent years. Solid, blocky shapes will make a comeback, often supported by slender, lightweight legs. The bulkiness of the furniture will also be softened by gently rounded corners and edges. Alongside these curves, again for the sake of contrast, it’s a good idea to place something geometric nearby—such as a painting with a rectangular frame and sharp edges, or a simple graphic featuring triangles, diamonds, and squares.
As the year begins, wall units are set to make a big comeback—but in a modern, functional, and modular form that will allow them to fit into almost any interior. Glass will be a must-have accent for living room furniture (and beyond!)—it will appear in display cabinets, but not only there. Classic white glass will be in style, as well as colored and smoked glass. An interesting trend involves mirrors, which designers are placing in various, unexpected spots, including living rooms—for example, hung above low-profile furniture.
In the Colors of Nature
Natural wood tones are a trend that clearly made its mark last year, and in 2022 it will truly take center stage. A wide variety of wood finishes will be in style, especially those in warm tones. Decors in dark brown or nearly black oak tones will also be appearing more and more frequently in our homes. The wood grain will also be important—the more pronounced, the better and more on-trend. Gray will remain at the top of the list—a versatile color that’s incredibly easy to work with in interior design.
Wood-effect finishes will look great on their own or combined with other materials. Details in muted gold, patinated copper, brass, and shiny chrome will be particularly trendy. There will be plenty of accents in deep black. We’ll also see accessories made from long-unseen precious stones—marble, granite, or imitations thereof.
Functionality
Modern furniture should not only be attractive and stylish, but also—and perhaps above all—functional. Many of us live in small apartments where every square meter of space must be planned wisely. That’s why modularity is so important—it applies to the wall units mentioned earlier, as well as living room sets and children’s and teens’ furniture. Another interesting trend is the growing popularity of 3-in-1 furniture, which can serve various functions and change its purpose throughout the day.
Time for Eco
Design in the early 2020s will focus on sustainability—a trend from which there is no turning back. In practice, this means taking action on many levels—from using recycled materials to make furniture, to giving a second life to furniture bought secondhand, to using natural materials such as seashells, feathers, and stones for decoration. Sustainability also influences the colors we choose for our interior design. In the near future, all the colors of nature will be in style—from earthy shades of linen to sun-bleached desert hues.
The trends predicted for the coming season pose a huge challenge for designers, but also for everyone who wants to live fashionably and with good taste. One thing is certain—our interiors are in for a lot of interesting changes very soon. Let’s hope that the result will be an interestingly decorated home where we’ll simply feel our best.
