Loft Bedroom – How to Decorate It

Let’s start with the walls. The loft style favors raw materials—brick, concrete, metal, or rough textures. In a loft-style bedroom, it’s a good idea to mix these materials—for example, cover the wall behind the bed with brick and the other walls with decorative concrete. What colors should the walls be? The favorite color of the loft style is gray—in all its shades—and this is the color that should dominate the walls. But the loft style also embraces other colors—pastels, black, navy blue, yellow, or red. These shades look great as accents or highlights on sections of the walls.

A loft bedroom is best furnished with furniture specifically designed for this purpose. It provides a huge amount of storage space where you can stow away not only pillows and a comforter, but also seasonal clothing and anything else that doesn’t fit in the closet.

Next to the bed, it’s a good idea to make room for nightstands —preferably ones with one or two drawers and a shelf or compartment for small items we like to keep out in the open. Truly industrial-style nightstands in the form of openwork metal baskets with wooden tops look particularly interesting.

What else might come in handy in a loft bedroom? Definitely spacious storage furniture – a dresser and a wardrobe. When choosing these loft-style pieces, opt for ones that will allow you to share the space fairly with your partner. We usually store small items of clothing—underwear, belts, ties—in a bedroom dresser, so it’s best to choose one with deep drawers. How many should there be? Definitely at least three, but really, the more drawers, the better. A loft-style closet, on the other hand, should include rods for hangers and shelves for folded clothes. Deep shelves at the very top of the closet are also useful for items you use less frequently.

You definitely won’t be able to create a small industrial-style bedroom in a small room. This style definitely favors spacious rooms with high ceilings. But a small loft-style bedroom? Why not—anything is possible! The design principles for small loft-style bedrooms are the same as for large ones, with the exception that you’ll need to plan the space wisely and choose the right loft-style furniture. In smaller rooms, you simply need to opt for a smaller bed, do without one nightstand, or choose a smaller dresser. It’s also a good idea to go with light colors, which will make the space appear larger and brighten up the room. Use dark colors primarily as accessories or color accents to add style.

The loft style works well with a variety of colors, but (note) only in the right combinations and proportions. The base color of a loft bedroom must be a muted shade, such as gray—this is the best option for loft walls. Light colors, such as white or shades of beige, also work well. Bold colors, such as yellow, red, or navy blue, are best reserved for accessories. Alternatively, you can use them to accent sections of the walls to define a specific area, such as the wall behind a closet or a desk. But be careful—the loft style doesn’t like too many colors in a single space. So remember not to create a riot of colors in your loft bedroom; instead, stick to accessories in no more than three different colors.

When choosing colors for a loft-style bedroom, look for ones that occur in real life. Neon pink is definitely not a good choice for a loft bedroom. The natural red hue of brick, steel gray, sunflower yellow, or the muted green of late summer—these are the color schemes you should focus on.

The loft style simply loves plants. So if you’re looking for accessories for a loft-style bedroom, first and foremost, invest in greenery. Place them in decorative black planters or freestanding pots with metal legs. And if you don’t have a green thumb, don’t give up on them entirely—just opt for still lifes instead. Paintings and prints that zoom in on the intense green of leaves not only look great but also give your eyes a rest and soothe your senses.

No cozy loft-style bedroom is complete without soft textiles—decorative pillows, bedspreads, or blankets. Fortunately, the loft style embraces accessories in a variety of colors, so you have plenty of options. A plush rug is also a good idea; it will not only make the bedroom feel cozy but also keep your feet comfortable.

A wall clock or an industrial-style alarm clock would also be a great addition to a loft bedroom. You can choose a clock made of metal or one made of wood with metal accents. Next up—lamps—preferably black or gray, made of wood or metal, reminiscent of lighting found in factory interiors. Simple lamps that look like light bulbs suspended from cables also work well in loft interiors.

What other loft-style accessories are there? Small shelves or metal baskets for blankets and pillows look really interesting. You could also consider a mirror in a metal frame, hung above a dresser. An open fireplace is another great option for those who dare.
