Children’s Desks—When Should We Buy the First One?
In the past, parents used to buy their child’s first desk when the child started school. Now, parents decide to buy a desk as early as preschool. This is because today’s children attend extracurricular activities from a very young age—such as foreign languages, music lessons, or coding classes. Kids also spend a lot of time drawing and doing various art projects. So, to help them develop their skills, a comfortable and quiet corner with the right furniture—where everything is within easy reach—will come in handy.
How do you choose the right desk height for a child?
The ideal desk for a child or teenager should be the right size, comfortable, and tailored to the child’s needs, age, and height. It must ensure proper posture—a straight back, arms resting comfortably on the desk surface, and feet completely flat on the floor or on a footrest. This means we should choose a different height for a preschooler, a different one for a child starting school, and yet another for a high school student. For example:
- For school-age children, the ideal height is between 55 and 75 cm.
- For a 7-year-old, the ideal desk height is between 55 and 60 cm.
- For a teenager who is about 170 cm tall (which also applies to most adults), the appropriate height starts at 80 cm.
This would mean that we’d have to replace a child’s desk every few years, which is impractical for most of us. If you want to avoid this, choose a height-adjustable desk that allows you to flexibly adjust the tabletop height to your child’s height. Another very good solution is to buy a standard-height desk and ensure proper posture using a chair and a footrest.
How should you arrange desks for children?
A good setup for a teen’s desk is one that doesn’t block natural light. This means that desks for right-handed children should face the window or be positioned with the left side facing the window. Conversely, desks for left-handed children should face the window or be positioned with the right side facing the window. It is not recommended to place the desk with its back to the window, because then the child’s body completely blocks the sunlight.
Children’s Desks—What Should Their Dimensions Be?
The workspace itself should be spacious enough for a young person to sit comfortably with their arms spread wide and have room to lay out a computer, notebooks, books, and school supplies. It is generally accepted that the desktop of a youth desk should be no less than 70 cm deep and 120 cm wide—these dimensions are the absolute minimum. Functionality is very important—the desk must be easy to keep clean, so the more drawers, cabinets, and shelves there are to store school supplies, the better. If a printer, scanner, or gaming console is also to be placed near the desk, it’s worth planning the entire study area optimally so that everything essential is within easy reach, while items used less frequently are still easily accessible.
Desk Lighting
The same applies to artificial desk lighting—a lamp for a right-handed child should be placed on the left side, and for a left-handed child, on the right. When choosing a desk lamp for children, opt for one with an adjustable light direction that allows you to direct the light to a specific spot. If possible, avoid harsh, white light, which can be glaring to the child’s eyes, as well as low-wattage bulbs. It’s better to opt for warm lighting with a brightness in the range of 400–1,000 lumens.
What should go above a child’s desk?
The wall above the desk is empty space that’s worth using in a cool and practical way. What should you hang there? There are plenty of ideas! Most often, people put a hanging shelf or cabinet there. If your child’s room is small, it’s a good idea to use the walls for storage and hang as many as two or three shelves—one above the other. This will be a great spot for books and school supplies, but also for decorations, such as a vacation photo in a nice frame. Desks tucked into the corner of the room, with the front and side walls lined with built-in shelves, look very interesting. Between the child’s desk and the shelf, you can hang a bulletin board—either a classic pinboard (e.g., cork or fabric-covered) or a metal one, to which important items can be attached with decorative clips. Another cool option is to paint part of the wall with magnetic paint—then you’ll need magnets to attach notepads to the wall.
