A nightstand—or bedside table —is a very important, yet often underappreciated piece of bedroom furniture. It’s always right there somewhere—next to the bed, next to the dresser. Sometimes there isn’t even enough room for it. But what if, for a change, we put it in the spotlight and take a closer look at it?

A nightstand is an essential piece of bedroom furniture—if you have room for one, be sure to place it next to your bed.
Nightstand or bedside table? The choice is yours. It all depends on how many items you want to keep right next to your bed.
Ideally, the top of the nightstand should be at the same height as the top of the mattress. This combination ensures comfort in everyday use.
Bedside tables on legs are stylish and elegant, but they’re rarely chosen by those who prefer practical solutions.
Modern bedroom nightstands are not only stylish but also functional and offer plenty of storage space.
If you want a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing bedroom, choose bedroom furniture from a single collection.
Why do we actually need a nightstand?
Do you think you don’t need a nightstand? Then think about where you’ll set down your glass of water or a mug of aromatic coffee on a Sunday morning—the kind you can finally enjoy in peace. Where will you put your alarm clock and water bottle? Where will you put the book you’re reading before bed or the TV remote? Think about the spacious drawers where you can stash your evening essentials—jewelry you took off before bed, hair accessories, or your nighttime hand cream. And most importantly—think about your phone, which will spend the night safely on the nightstand’s surface, plugged into its charger.
What should you look for when choosing a nightstand?
For everything! But first, think about functionality. Consider what you want to store in it. Some cabinets have deep drawers, others have doors, and still others have only open compartments or small drawers. We recommend modern nightstands, that offer plenty of storage space for the things you like to keep close by while you sleep. So a large nightstand surface will come in handy for items you want to access quickly, such as your phone or the newspaper you read in the evening. The nightstand is also a good place for an alarm clock and night light. An interesting option is a niche, which allows you to keep various items close at hand yet discreetly hidden. Every bedroom also includes a cabinet with a drawer or a lockable cabinet, because not all bedroom items are suitable for keeping out in the open. A cabinet with a drawer is also a good place to store jewelry, especially small pieces like rings. If left on the countertop, they could fall, but locked away in a drawer, they’ll safely wait until morning, when you’ll want to wear them again. Some bedside tables for the bedroom They have lowered tops—it’s a cool and very practical feature that keeps small items left on top from falling onto the floor. Or you won’t knock them off while trying to turn off the alarm clock that’s ringing insistently at the crack of dawn. We’ve used this solution in our nightstands from the collection bedroom furniture DENTRO, and we have to admit that it works great in our customers’ homes.
What are the most popular types of nightstands?
We categorize nightstands and bedside tables for the bedroom based on their functionality. The simplest ones are those equipped only with a tabletop, or possibly a small drawer or a compartment beneath the tabletop. They’re elegant and very trendy right now. Unfortunately, they’re also not very functional, since you can’t really store anything inside them. This type of nightstand is best when you’re not concerned with storage next to the bed, but rather with design. Slim, lightweight furniture is also a good choice if you want to create a spacious and “airy” interior.
Classic nightstands are those designed with more or less storage space. They generally have one or two drawers, and sometimes a door that conceals small shelves. Combined nightstands are also popular—for example, those with a drawer and a compartment (such as our nightstand from the IDEA bedroom furniture collection) or a drawer and a door. What you store in them depends entirely on your needs.
Of course, nightstands can also be categorized by style. Currently, modern nightstands with legs are considered the most fashionable. Their enduring popularity means there’s a huge selection of nightstands on legs —with taller or shorter legs, slender or quite thick legs, geometric supports, or loft-style legs. It must be admitted, however, that fans of practical solutions rarely opt for bedside tables on legs. Why? Because it’s hard to get a vacuum cleaner or electric mop under them, which means that anything that falls under the furniture has to be removed and cleaned by hand.
Bedside tables can also be categorized based on the type of room they’re intended for. They look different in a couple’s bedroom than in a single person’s room, and even different in a child’s or teenager’s room. Yes, nightstands are practically standard in junior collections. Even the youngest children need a spot next to their bed for a nightlight, a drink, and a book to read before bed.
How do you choose a nightstand to go with your bed?
When choosing a nightstand to go with your bed, there are two factors to consider: aesthetics and functionality. The most important factor is the height of the nightstand. It’s most convenient when the top of the nightstand is at the same height as the top of the mattress or slightly higher. This makes it easy to reach items on the surface. If your nightstand is much higher than the bed, it won’t be comfortable to reach for your belongings. While lying in bed, you also won’t be able to see the items on the top, which will result in fumbling around in the dark to find them. That’s why, before you head to a furniture store, be sure to measure the height of your bed, including the mattress. You can also opt for furniture from a single collection—furniture designers guarantee that their products are expertly tailored in terms of features that make everyday use easier.
Choosing a nightstand and bed from the same furniture collection has another advantage. It ensures a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing bedroom setup, as the pieces will complement each other in terms of design, color, and the texture of the materials used. This is a good solution if you don’t consider yourself a design expert and want to go with tried-and-true options. However, if you dream of a unique, a modern bedroom… In that case, you’re limited only by your imagination and financial means. Try to exercise restraint, though. Bedside table on legs It looks great next to a massive bed, but the reverse isn’t necessarily true. A bed on slender legs paired with a sturdy nightstand is generally an unattractive combination. Recently, there’s even been a trend of placing two completely different nightstands in a single bedroom. This approach is certainly original, but also quite risky. If they’re poorly chosen and don’t match at all, equipment components They can bring chaos and a sense of randomness into the bedroom, which will prevent it from becoming the dreamy, intimate sanctuary you envision. However, if you manage to maintain aesthetic consistency, this design can create a real “WOW” effect.
Of course, the materials used to make bedroom nightstands and their colors are also very important. White, gray, and natural wood tones are currently very popular and are unlikely to go out of style anytime soon. They’re also versatile. They can be easily adapted to almost any interior design and seamlessly combined with other furniture in the home. They’ll also easily withstand changes in wall colors and bedroom decor.
When buying a modern nightstand, pay attention to its orientation, as some are designed for the right or left side of the bed. Only when placed on the correct side of the bed can you fully enjoy the functionality of the piece. This applies to both bedroom collections and furniture for children and teens.
What if there isn’t enough room for a nightstand?
Sometimes our bedroom only has a bed, a closet, and practically nothing else. Unfortunately, that’s a downside small bedrooms in an apartment building. In situations like these, a bed with a clever shelf built into the headboard comes in handy—namely, our ingenious DENTRO bed. The shelf hidden in the headboard isn’t large, but it can hold your essentials and serves perfectly as a nightstand. You can store the books you’re reading, jewelry, or hand cream here.
