Chest of drawers vs. chest with doors?

You say dresser – do you think a piece of furniture with several practical drawers. These types of dressers are the most common, and in fact, they make up the majority of what’s available in furniture stores. But a chest of drawers isn’t just about drawers. It can just as easily have two doors or a door and top drawers. It can also have compartments and shelves or even vertical dividers, for example, for office documents. All of this is designed to allow you to conveniently store items in your dresser—such as clothes, underwear, school supplies, or work documents. Which version of the dresser is best—one with drawers, one with doors, or perhaps another type—depends on the individual needs of the household members and the rooms where the furniture will be placed.

How you arrange a chest of drawers largely depends on the room it’s intended for. For a bedroom or walk-in closet, a chest of drawers is usually the best choice. This is mainly because these rooms already have a closet with hanging rods and shelves where you can organize clothes such as pants, sweatshirts, or sweaters. However, there is a lack of storage space for smaller items—underwear, socks, and scarves. And drawers are the most convenient solution for this.

Various types of chests of drawers work great in the living room—from a low chest that can serve as a TV stand to a tall chest with drawers, doors, and even glass panels all in one unit. Chests of drawers with multiple functions are particularly noteworthy. Behind their doors, you’ll find plenty of storage space for items such as tablecloths, towels, or bedding; in the drawers, you can store documents; and behind the glass doors, you can set up a mini bar. Large living room chests of drawers with glass panels are also used to house a home library. It’s also a good idea to use the top of the chest of drawers to display decorations, such as photos, flowers, or candles.

Children’s rooms and teenagers’ rooms always follow their own rules—and this also applies to how dressers are arranged. In the rooms of the youngest family members, large chests of drawers—as well as those with drawers, doors, and open compartments—work best. The former are ideal strictly for storing small items of clothing. The latter are best used as furniture designed for school activities. Their practical layout allows for plenty of storage space for a wide variety of items—books, school supplies, atlases, and all kinds of educational materials. They’re also useful for storing larger items of clothing, especially when there’s no more room in the closet.
